S/V Savannah Blog

S/V Savannah was launched in 1963 at the Cheoy Lee shipyard in Hong Kong. She is 35 feet long, bronze fastened and planked in teak over steam bent frames. Preparations are continuing for the voyage from Santa Barbara to San Francisco and back. This blog is intended to chronicle the preparation and the voyage, now planned for the summer of 2011. The voyage will begin when the vessel and crew are ready and when the weather is right. (Photo by Steve Hodges)

I've sailed most of the North American west coast from Ketchikan to Panama, and from Florida to Panama. I was fist mate aboard Schooner Gallant sailing with Larry Green, Santa Barbara to Puerto Vallarta and back. I sailed the Carribean aboard Gallant from Ft Lauderdale to Panama and up the west coast. I served 1 year in Merchant Marine off the California coast (M/V George M, M/V Wendy Star). I've sailed S/V Savannah over 15,000 miles mainly in local waters around Santa Barbara compiling 8 sailing logbooks and a lifetime of fun and adventure between San Diego and San Miguel Island. Savannah sailed to San Diego for the Ancient Mariners Race on May 7, 2011, stopping at Channel Islands Harbor, Isthmus of Catalina, Marina Del Rey, Newport Beach Harbor and Oceanside along the way or on the way back. The Boat: S/V Savannah, is a Cheoy Lee Lion, made in Hong Kong in 1963. She's a 35 foot solid teak sloop with a 4000 lb. 3/4 length iron keel. I bought her in December, 1983. Her seams are bone dry! Schooling: PhD, Computer Eng, UCSB 1979 MSEE, Computer Engr, UCSB 1969 BSEE, Elec Engr, UCSB 1967 I Married the lovely Jill Richards on May 1, 2005
